The Substance Addiction (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 2017 (SACAT) comes into force on 21 February 2018. The Act establishes a regime for compulsory assessment and treatment of people with severe substance addictions whose capacity to consent to treatment for that addiction is severely impaired in order to restore capacity to the point where a patient can undertake voluntary treatment. SACAT replaces the Alcohol and Drug Addiction Act 1966.

The presenters will explain the criteria for compulsory treatment and severe substance addiction, and take you through a step-by-step breakdown of the new steps of assessment, treatment and judicial review.

Topics covered will include:

  • Principles of the Act
  • Criteria for compulsory treatment
  • The three processes
    – application
    – assessment
    – treatment
  • Powers and rights under the Act
  • How the new Act differs from the old Act.
