From the chair

It is my great pleasure to chair the 13th Criminal Law Conference (formerly Criminal Law Symposium).

The conference, held every two years, is rightly recognised as one of, if not the, premier educational events in the criminal law jurisdiction. Its purpose remains constant: in-depth and lucid analysis of key developments in criminal law and practice. Moreover, not only does it bring together a range of outstanding presenters, but it also brings the profession together to share ideas, camaraderie and collegiality, a particular hallmark of the criminal bar.

Once again, the conference organisers have put together an impressive programme, covering both popular perennials – the evidence and sentencing updates – as well as sessions on topical and important developments such as the Te Ao Mārama framework, mental impairment and the criminal law, the implications of sentencing and bail on children, and practical options for successful defendants.

I do hope you will be able to attend this year’s conference whether in person or by live web stream. It promises stimulating presentations, as well as a forum to mix and mingle with your fellow practitioners.

I look forward to seeing you in November.

Chair: The Honourable Justice Sally Fitzgerald
