Introduction

The Residential Tenancies Act 1986 is the law that governs residential rental agreements for landlords and tenants in New Zealand. Tenancy Services is a part of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), and administers the Residential Tenancies Act (the RTA) 1986, Unit Titles Act 2010 and the Healthy Homes Guarantee Act 2017.

Key legislation changes that came into effect in 2016 and most recently in 2018 affect:
