Introduction from the Chair

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying:
And this same flower that smiles to-day,
To-morrow will be dying.

Robert Herrick 1591 – 1674

The rosebuds of commerce take a little effort to gather but they have been there in the last three to five years for those prepared to glean them. The indications, however, are that harvesting may be more difficult in the future.

We must maintain and improve our skills. Motor vehicle manufacturers know this. Even though the basic concept of Henry Ford is unchanged, every year sees innovation and refinement with the introduction of new models.

This is also what we lawyers must do. We must become familiar with, and adapt to, changes in the law, keep up with new products in the property area and ensure that our practices meet the needs of the consumer and our professional obligations.

This looks daunting enough, but for property lawyers the challenge is greater. We regard ourselves as a property speciality which unfortunately, in some people’s minds, equates to conveyancing. In fact, this is not what a true property lawyer does; we do not merely convey a property. The practice of a property lawyer, while being a specialty, is an amalgam of skills requiring us all to draw on our knowledge and experience in a number of areas ranging from trusts and wills to property relationships and tax. It is these skills which combine to create a property specialist. By declaring ourselves in this fashion, we have enormously widened our specialty but at the same time increased the demands imposed on us.

So, this is what our conference is all about.

By providing you with the tools to refine your skills, we hope to equip you with the armoury to face the challenges of the future.
