In this hands-on workshop, you will follow through a family violence/interim parenting case from the first client meeting to representing your client in the Family Court. You will learn how to master the core tasks, methods, strategies, and documentary and non-documentary procedures you need to know.
Put the jigsaw together and get the total picture – through precedents, case study discussions, practical guidance and performance critique. This course is sound, participatory and proven, and is recommended by the Ministry of Justice.

The programme is focused on skills development, knowledge and know-how. A range of teaching techniques will be used, including small group discussion, role playing, mock courts and individual exercises.
Family law practitioners with up to three years of experience. Note: Limited to 36 participants at each centre.
Participants will receive materials in advance. You will need to spend at least 3 hours reviewing the materials.

Judge Hana Ellis District Court, Auckland Hana (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Porou) is a District Court Judge in the family and criminal jurisdictions based in Auckland, and was previously in Whāngarei. Prior to her appointment, she worked in South Auckland with a broad family practice including court appointments as Lawyer for Child and Lawyer to Assist and was a Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) provider. Hana previously taught the NZLS CLE Lawyer for Child workshop when she was in practice. |

Usha Patel Barrister, Auckland Usha is not only a very experienced family law practitioner and mediator, but also has experience in criminal law, civil litigation and even conveyancing. An Auckland family law barrister since 1996, she developed the comprehensive materials for this course and enjoys the interactive style of presentation. In Usha’s spare time, when she is not with family and friends, she writes for Westlaw on child law and procedure and is training to be a supervisor. |
