This webinar looks at the issue of self-represented litigants – referred to throughout as litigants in person (LiPs) – from two perspectives. First, interacting with an opposing LiP in a dispute. In this part we discuss how to overcome many of the challenges to working with an opposing LiP to build a successful working relationship. We pay particular attention to issues such as costs and settlement, dealing with querulant litigants and managing your client. Second, ways that lawyers can assist LiPs. In this part we consider the risks and benefits of providing unbundled services to a litigant who is otherwise acting in person. We also consider two other support roles lawyers might play: McKenzie friend and amicus curiae.
These are the slides included in the webinar presentation.
