Presentation time: 90 minutes

As New Zealanders, we pride ourselves on having an open, free and transparent government. However, the ongoing health of any democracy rests on the degree of engagement that citizens have with their law makers. Lobbying is a key element of this process. It’s not just for professional lobbyists – everyone should be able to have some influence on issues that matter to them. Lawyers are often the first port of call for seeking advice in this area so it makes sense to keep your political knowledge up to speed.

This webinar is based around two main themes: planning engagement with relevant politicians, officials and stakeholders; then executing the plan effectively. It has been designed especially for NZLS CLE, derived from TorquePoint’s full-day programme, LobbyTorque.

Topics covered will include:

  • The political spectrum and the correct approach to dealing with different sectors
  • The passage of ideas into law and where in that process you can gain maximum leverage
  • Maximising Select Committee or local body consultation opportunities
  • The internal structure of a Minister’s office and how to use that effectively
  • Whether to employ professional lobbyists or not
  • How to use informal lobbying opportunities to best advantage.

Please contact us if you use a dial up internet connection.

Welcome to our webinar on Effective Political Lobbying.

This webinar is based around two main themes:

• Planning engagement with relevant politicians, officials and stakeholders; and
• Executing the engagement plan effectively.

The webinar has been designed especially for NZ Law Society’s CLE programme, delivered from TorquePoint’s full-day programme, LobbyTorque.

We will focus on lawyers but many of the same principles will apply to and be helpful to your clients, particularly those involved in government relations.

The webinar will last for approximately 90 minutes, and you can refer to this workbook for additional information and retain it after the session. This workbook provides information which you can read before or after the webinar for better knowledge of effective political engagement.

We would like the webinar to be interactive, so please feel free to ask questions as we go through the material. We will also leave some time at the end of the webinar to answer any questions you may have or explore some of the topics in more detail.
