Introduction to Civil Litigation Skills 2020

Introduction to Civil Litigation Skills 2020
Add to CPD Planner

Surveys of recently admitted practitioners repeatedly identify civil litigation as the area in which most practitioners in their first years of practice want formal training. This programme responds to this need and complements both the skills-based pre-admission courses and the annual NZLS CLE Litigation Skills Programme.

As a recently admitted practitioner, you should not miss this unique opportunity to develop practical skills in civil litigation and ensure you will be able to face a court case with confidence.

In this intensive, small-group workshop you will:

  • Learn how to handle a single file from beginning to end
  • Identify and understand the various steps in the process
  • Develop the practical skills you need to handle this, and a range of other litigation files, competently and confidently
  • Learn how to draft pleadings, evidence and submissions
  • Become aware of the ethical issues involved
  • Learn how to present an argument in court and improve your advocacy skills.

Learning objectives

You will understand how to prepare for and conduct a civil trial. You will know how to organise case materials and draft various court documents.

Presenters will take you through lectures, discussions and preparing the documents in groups. Participants will present their individually drafted oral submissions on day two.
