This intensive will now be held by live web stream only.

From the Chair

Tēna koutou katoa and welcome to this year’s conference – with a diverse and topical programme. It is noteworthy our theme “no walk in the meadow” was chosen before COVID-19 arrived. While Covid has had a massive impact on us, it has helpfully reminded us that agriculture is still the real base of our economy.

We have seen the farming sector denigrated in respect of its methane emissions, the detriment it brings to our waterways and the devastation created by some forestry. Even with those internal battles, the likes of Asia and other international markets can’t get enough of our horticulture, meat and milk products.

What has all this meant for our farmers? Many have forged on regardless and deal with the ongoing issues eg the recent drought conditions. It is called resilence.

This year for probably the first time in this forum, we are opening our minds to our farming clients ongoing metal health. I believe this is an opportunity we should all take to support our clients and our local Rural Support Trusts in their efforts.

We are all privileged to work for folk who form the background of our economy. I think we do need to consider at all times that they are people first, who deserve our respect and support. We can do that best by showing them the empathy worthy of our relationship and provide them with timely, worthwhile and appropriate advice.

Enjoy the conference.
