Michael is a partner in Chapman Tripp’s Auckland finance team and also co-leads their national restructuring and insolvency team. He has been involved in most of New Zealand’s significant restructurings and insolvencies over the last fifteen years. Michael has extensive international restructuring and insolvency experience, having worked in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Bangkok and London. Michael is consistently recognised by Chambers Asia Pacific, IFLR1000 and Legal 500 Asia Pacific as a leading lawyer in restructuring & insolvency. He has advised numerous guarantors and creditors on the enforceability of guarantees.
Michael practises in civil, property and commercial litigation. Before he went to the Bar, Michael worked at Henry Davis York in Sydney, Jones Fee in Auckland and Russell McVeagh in Wellington. He has LLMs from Canterbury and Cambridge Universities and teaches guarantees at the Faculty of Law, Auckland University. Michael co-presented the NZLS CLE seminar series on guarantees in 2010 and 2017.
