It is a statutory requirement that clients interested in buying into a retirement village receive independent legal advice and have the effect and implications of the contract that they are contemplating entering into explained to them. This practical seminar will focus on providing resources and knowledge to help you to ask your clients the right questions and provide them with robust advice.
 
This seminar will include: 

  • An overview of the retirement village regime in New Zealand; the sector players, different types of villages and operators
  • An overview of the core village documents and some key terms to look out for
  • Practical tips on how you can tailor advice to suit your client, advocate for your client and a discussion of the circumstances in which you should
  • Common questions your clients may have and how to best advise on these
  • A discussion of your duties when advising your clients and the pros & cons of family involvement.

Learning objectives

After attending this seminar you will gain:

  • An understanding of some of the key terms to be aware of in village documents.
  • Greater knowledge on some key issues for intending residents when entering a retirement village.
  • Increased practical knowledge on how best to advise your clients.

Michelle practises as a partner at Anthony Harper Lawyers and is head of the team providing specialist legal advice in the areas of aged care and retirement villages. Michelle has worked for many years with retirement village operators, intending and existing residents and statutory supervisors and has an excellent understanding of the key issues and concerns of intending residents.

Liz is a corporate lawyer who has provided advice in the retirement village sector since the introduction of the Retirement Villages Act 2003. With a keen interest in issues impacting on the sector, Liz regularly advises retirement village operators (on matters ranging from compliance with retirement village law to the sale and purchase of villages), statutory supervisors (in their role as village supervisors), and residents (when entering into occupation right agreements).

National Manager for Retirement Villages at the Commission since 2015. Troy has been a legal practitioner and then instructor and director for legal professionals, he has held senior advisory roles in the private and public sector and has chaired a large Auckland-based community trust. Currently is also an elected representative sitting on the Orakei Local Board of Auckland Council.

Cancellation and refund policy

If written notice of cancellation of a registration arrives before the day of the seminar we will refund the registration fee, less an administration fee of $40. If you are unable to attend, you may send a substitute - to correctly assign CPD credit, CLE must be notified in advance.
