Kia ora tatou
It is my privilege to invite you to join us at the 2020 NZLS CLE Tax Conference to be held on 10 September 2020 at The Northern Club and by Live Web Stream.
In a sense, this will be a Conference like no other, held in a year like no other. When the planning committee for this conference had its first (Zoom) meeting, we were in day six o Alert Level 4, locked down and in the grip of a global disruptor that seemingly spared no country and against which even the richest and most technologically advanced economies and societies had no defence.
It was thus inevitable that this Conference would have the theme of how our tax system, tax settings, tax laws and taxpayers cope with and respond to the economic and financial consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. These consequences are severe and will be felt by all sectors of society for some time to come and this Conference will enable tax and legal practitioners to play their part in assisting and guiding their clients towards the eventual economic recovery.
All the sessions in this Conference are future-focused. All of them, whether it is the session on cross-border taxation or the session on residential property taxation, raise and deal with not only challenges that are already here but challenges to come. The sessions on our tax system in these changing and uncertain times are particularly directed at tax issues thrown up by the unprecedented governmental measures needed to arrest the spread of COVID-19 and, in that respect, embody the theme of this Conference. But changes will not come only from COVID-19; for instance, in the area of gifting and donations, there has been a recent legislative amendment directly in response to a Court of Appeal decision and the law on the operation of s BG 1 and tax avoidance continues to develop.
The NZLS CLE Tax Conference has traditionally seen fruitful collaboration between tax practitioners in the legal, accounting and public sectors and this year is no exception. The presenters come from a range of backgrounds and in co-presenting their various sessions, will provide wide and diverse expertise and perspectives. We are specially delighted that Matt Andrew, from the OECD in Paris, is able to join us (virtually).
It is also with enormous pleasure that we welcome Lindsay McKay as our presenter in the final session of the Conference. Lindsay hardly needs any introduction and if tax had rock stars, he would be one. Lindsay will share his insights on the implications of the High Court and Court of Appeal decisions in Frucor Suntory New Zealand Limited v Commissioner of Inland Revenue for the interpretation of section BG 1 and tax avoidance and if anyone can make a daunting subject accessible, digestible and relevant, Lindsay can.
I look forward to seeing you at the conference.Chair: Pam Davidson, Lambton Chambers, Wellington
