From the President NZILE

I am pleased to invite you to the 2017 Legal Executives Conference, my first as NZILE President and the third to be held in Wellington.

Following the overwhelming interest in the last conference, in 2015, this year’s conference will be held at Te Papa, a spacious and uniquely New Zealand venue. As always, the conference will provide wonderful opportunities to learn and to network with other legal executives from across New Zealand.

The topics for this year’s conference cover most areas of a legal executive’s work and are aimed to interest everyone. I encourage you to attend and enjoy!

Rebecca Smith

From the Executive Director NZLS

You are all experts in your field. Today’s legal professional needs to ensure they keep their expertise well honed. And while it has become fashionable in some quarters to deride the role and value of experts, the need for expertise and up-to-date savvy in today’s complicated legal world is more compelling than ever.

Keeping up with technical skills and the changes in substantive law is crucial. This is amply illustrated by a quick look at the programme for the next few days. Who would have thought that we would need to worry about whether a house that we were acting on the sale of or for a lessor, was contaminated by the manufacture of drugs? Nor would we have  ontemplated an obligation to warn settlors of possible claims on trust property by a subsequent partner – a partner who may not have even been on the horizon at the time the trust was set up.

It is no answer to a claim in negligence to say “I didn’t know”. Today’s traps for the unwary and the out-of-date are everywhere.

The underlying message coming out of the conference programme is to “keep vigilant”. You don’t know what you don’t know. One of the advantages of attending this conference is you are able to get a wide view of what is on the horizon. The sessions are focused, relevant and useful.

The Conference should be a mandatory fixture in every legal executive’s calendar. It is a conference by legal executives and legal experts for their own. It also offers the opportunity to network, seek information from colleagues and spend time honing our own skills.

Congratulations to the NZILE for once again offering a challenging programme. The Institute continues to prove its value and leadership in this fast moving world.

I am sure you will find something to interest you, certainly something to enrich you and to add to your knowledge. This Conference represents an opportunity for a worthwhile investment in your career.
